In view of the increased number of cars on the F1 grid in 2010 the FIA have announced the new points system. For several years F1 has run a 10, 8, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1 system.
Drivers will now score 25 points for a win, 20 points for second place, 18 for third, then 15, 10, 8, 6, 5, 3, 2 and 1 points respectively. This will allocate points to the first ten runners.
Speaking in an interview on Radio 5 Live (BBC) today Jenson Button said “Really? It show how out of the loop I’ve been for the last couple of weeks!”. Parties, Jenson… though probably not at Lewis Hamilton’s house.
Having collected his thoughts a little Jenson went on to add “It’s a great idea – it’s nice that you get five points over second for winning. That’s important because we all love winning races. I won six races this year and I got just two more points.” Partly correct, but a pedant (not me) would remark that Malaysia only earned half-points for the drivers.
Still, in lieu of the Bernster’s ‘gold medal’ idea that was mercifully flushed down F1’s carbon-fibre toilet like the turd it was the 25 > 20 points system allows a driver who wins regularly to maintain a strong advantage in the championship standings.
